Product Description
Hamilton Beach The Scoop Single-Serve Coffeemaker - 49981
Product Description
The Scoop Single-Serve Coffeemaker goes where no coffeemaker has gone before, brewing hotter, faster and better-tasting coffee than most gourmet machines out there. And, its benefits don't stop there. The Scoop Coffeemaker utilizes the simplicity of ground coffee and brews a customizable cup quickly: an 8 oz. cup in less than 90 seconds or a 14 oz. travel mug in under two-and-a-half minutes.
Aside from its versatility in using inexpensive coffee grounds to brew a great-tasting cup, The Scoop Coffeemaker is designed for ultra-simple preparation in three straightforward steps: 1) Scoop 2) Place 3) Brew. It features a steel mesh scoop for filtering freshly ground coffee and comes with a built-in, adjustable stand that flips to accommodate a standard-size cup or a taller travel mug.
All in all, The Scoop Single-Serve Coffeemaker offers affordability and no fuss with lots of options. There's no need for extra equipment, high-tech buttons or extra equipment, either.
Product Uses & Unique Features
Allowing for Various Coffee Grind Types
The Scoop Coffeemaker doesn't need pre-packaged K-Cup packs or coffee pods, which can get expensive, and not to mention stale, over time. Instead, it comes with a mesh scoop filter that gives users the choice of any flavor (caramel, hazelnut, vanilla, etc), any brand (Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc.) and any strength (Regular or Bold) pleasing to their taste.
Differing Boldness Levels
With The Scoop Coffeemaker, versatility is key. Whether you decide to go with a mainstream brand coffee or stronger premium-brand coffee, you need a machine that understands and quickly adapts. Use the REGULAR setting for a quick basic, automatic drip coffee, or get an upgrade and choose BOLD for more fine grinds, decaf or stronger flavors premium-brand coffee like Starbucks or Melitta. Just remember that the finer the grind, the longer it takes to brew. For bolder coffee, the water passes through at a slower rate, but allows more contact time and better flavor extraction for a better-tasting cup when done brewing.
Measuring Proportions Appropriately
Not sure how much coffee to add when brewing? No worries -- each scoop filter is labeled with two measuring lines for exact serving amounts. And more isn't necessarily better, in this case. Overfilling the scoop doesn't allow room for brewing and water can overflow and spill over, ultimately meaning weaker coffee.
Adjusting the Cup Size
Before brewing, adjust the L-shaped cup rest to make sure your cup is as close to the dispensing nozzle as possible. For travel mugs, fit the cup rest against the coffeemaker and place your mug on top of the drip tray.
Award-Winning Design
The Scoop Coffeemaker was awarded the "2012 Good Housekeeping Very Innovative Products (VIP) Award" by Good Housekeeping Research Institute. In addition, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) gave it high rankings for its ability to use coffee grinds, instead of packs or pods, and simultaneously give users the freedom to choose their own flavor, strength and cup size for their coffee.
Product Feature Benefits
- Costs pennies per cup, compared to leading competitors' single-size packs
- Proportions coffee exactly with single-serve scoop filter
- Brews an 8 oz. cup of coffee in less than 90 seconds
- Built-in adjustable stand holds standard-size cup and taller travel mugs
- One steel mesh scoop filter included; no need for paper filters
- Wide drip tray on base acts as a spill-resistant drain for excess coffee
- Settings for REGULAR (automatic drip) and BOLD coffee
- Durable, stainless steel features ensure coffeemaker's longevity
- Automatically shuts off after brewing
Tips & Care
Run one or two cycles through the machine before first use. When one cycle is complete, the coffeemaker automatically shuts off. When grinding your own coffee beans, remember to purchase beans that were recently roasted (within a week is best), and grind them every time you brew a fresh cup. When brewing, keep ground coffee below the MAX fill line and do not use more than 14 ounces (410 ml) of water. To stop brewing mid-cycle, press either REGULAR or BOLD, and the unit will shut off. If there is no water in the water reservoir and a brew button is pushed, the unit will not brew.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2012Color: SilverVerified PurchaseLet me first tell you that I am an extremely picky person who is not prone to gushing over anything. I can always seem to find something to fuss about. I give this machine a triple 10!! I was suspicious of everything. My husband and I are both coffee drinkers. I don't always drink reg coffee. Sometimes half caf. You can make a cup of whatever kind you are wanting with absolutely no fuss whatsoever. And quickly & quietly. And there are 2 scoops so that if I make a cup of whatever kind I'm wanting that day, I can rinse out the scooper and then use the other scooper to make the kind he wants without putting a wet scoop in the container of coffee. I tend towards a regular size mug, but he likes a bigger man size mug. And sometimes one of us wants to use one of our travel mugs to take a taller cup with us when we have errands to run. No problem there either! In the blink of an eye you can flip over the silver plate that the cup/mug sits on and it becomes shorter so that you can use it for a shorter container.
I tend to get frustrated with all the different machines in the house. It seems like a person needs a college degree and a 5 pound instruction manual to learn how to operate them. This one is as easy as it gets. You do need to learn how much coffee to put in the scooper to make your coffee the way that you like it, but that's about it. After you put your scooper with the appropriate amount of coffee in it, you fill your mug with water and pour the water in. Push the button. I always push bold. And by the time you do your next little morning chore. Feed the dog, open the blinds, etc. there's your coffee.
I have read many of the reviews of this item and usually I will decide to purchase or not based on reviews. Glad I didn't let the reviews make my decision this time. The things that people are complaining about I don't see what they are seeing. I am very temperature sensitive and the coffee comes out quite hot. And someone wrote about a plastic taste?? Huh?? And there were several complaints about weak coffee. Now I will tell you that you will need to use a different grind of coffee for this machine. You will need to use one that grinds the coffee very finely. Like powder. Because of how quickly the coffee is made the water and the coffee spend very little time "together". Maybe that is their problem. You can't use the grind type that we are all used to using. The automatic drip grind. You won't get the flavor out of the coffee that you are used to. Take a few minutes. Go on a few of the sites that sell the different brands like Caribou, Green Mountain, Paul Newman, etc. and learn about the different grinds. It's no different that having to learn about the auto-drip versus the old percolator coffee grind that Grandma used to use in her old coffee pot. Remember those?
I asked quite a few of my friends and no one has one of these so I went ahead and took the chance and bought one. I couldn't be happier. I just got done cleaing up our Cuisinart coffeemaker and putting it in the cabinet. We will save it for when we need to make more than a couple of cups of coffee. Maybe if company comes over.
This wonderful machine is about 60% smaller than the machine it replaces so it takes up a ton less counter space. It also doesn't have a water resevoir that uses electricity constantly to keep the water warm 24/7. Why is that necessary? So you can save like 10 seconds cause the water is already hot? That sure doesn't help the electric bill. And frankly. I like my coffee to be made with fresh water. Not water that has been sitting around for days. My husband has been bugging me for about a year that he wanted a Keurig, but I refused to succumb to all the hype and get locked into having to use the ridiculously expensive per cup cost K cups. Even on sale, the cheapest I could find K cups were about 55-60 cents. And that was extremely rare. Now yes. That is much cheaper than going to your neighborhood _______ (you fill in the blank) but I just wasn't going to do it. I did find that there are now some companies that make reusable plastic cups that look like the K cups and you fill them with your own coffee, so that would have been okay. I guess. Those refillable cups were $9-10 each so I don't know what you save there. But somehow I just knew that if I kept looking I would find what I wanted and I did. An inexpensive machine to buy. Easy to clean and use. No stupid K cups. Doesn't take up a lot of space on the counter. Simple to use. Inexpensive to buy and use daily. Made by a company that has been around for decades so if heaven forbid there is a problem, my guess would be that you could call them and get it solved quickly and to the satisfaction of the customer. All in all, a rare thing. Good value for your money & a machine that is totally geared towards the customer's satisfaction. Go get one!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022Color: Stainless SteelVerified PurchaseI had been looking for a single cup coffee maker that DIDN'T use pods for a while, but none really impressed me very much. Then I came across "The Scoop" by Hamilton Beach and I pushed the button and made the purchase. The coffee maker arrived on time and in pristine condition. I had read the reviews beforehand so when I placed my order, I also purchased 1 box of #1 coffee filters (seen in the photo) along with a new 16 oz THERMOS Stainless King Vacuum-Insulated Travel Tumbler. After running 3 cycles of clean water through the system, I made my first mug of coffee following the directions exactly. I did NOT use a paper filter and to be honest, I didn't run into an issue of sludge being in the bottom of the mug, nor did I encounter any grounds floating in my coffee. Lastly, there was NO sputtering during the brewing and NO splattered coffee escaped outside the travel mug... not a drop. That said, I was using the travel mug pictured which almost goes completely to the bottom of the filter well so there was very little room for anything to escape. All in all, the first mug wasn't bad. It had a slight acidic taste to it but was within my boundaries of being called "decent." After I finished the first mug of coffee, I rinsed both filters and the filter well out thoroughly and prepared to make my second mug; this time with a paper filter. As seen in the photo, I placed a #1 paper filter between the brew basket and secondary filter. The grounds were placed inside the brew basket. Almost an entire bottle of Dasani water was poured in (which was surprising since the well is only supposed to hold a maximum of 14 oz and a bottle of Dasani is 16.9 oz) and the bold brew cycle was again started. A few minutes later the second mug was ready, and it DID actually taste better than the first. The slight acidic taste I experienced with the first mug was not present in the second mug. This improved the taste from being decent to being fantastic! So, in summary, I do not believe that paper filters are necessary when using "The Scoop" coffee maker but IMO the paper filters do cut down on the oil and acidic taste turning a decent cup of coffee into an even better cup.
I would easily recommend this coffee machine to friends and family who are looking for something other than a "pod machine." The price is extremely reasonable, it's well made, looks nice, cleans up easily, doesn't take up a bunch of space and most importantly, it makes very good coffee. Oh... almost forgot... when brewing a cup or mug do NOT remove the cup when the coffee stops pouring into the cup. I discovered rather quickly that the coffee will stop pouring several times while filling my travel mug but would then start up again a second or two later. The mug/cup is ready to be removed once the green light goes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money well spent!
Color: Stainless SteelVerified PurchaseI am so pleased with this little unit.
I got rid of my coffeemaker that took plastic pods because it was bad for the environment and the pods were expensive. This is a great solution.
It’s lightweight and streamlined. Fits nicely on my kitchen counter.
I haven’t experienced any of the other issues that some reviewers seem to have either ;
Coffee isn’t hot enough - mine is plenty hot. Just perfect actually.
Coffee tastes like plastic - run water through the unit a couple of times before you use it; as per the instructions.
Coffee splashes all over the place - turn the adjustable metal plate upside down to raise smaller cups closer to where the coffee drips out; as per the instructions.
I like that I can adjust the amount of coffee grounds to my taste and choose a regular or bold brew (bold for me). I have also used it for tea; just put a tea bag in the filter instead of coffee. Works great!

5.0 out of 5 stars 使いやすさ抜群!
Color: SilverVerified Purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Single Serve
Color: SilverVerified PurchaseI’m surprised that along with so many positive reviews, there were also many unreasonably negative reviews on Amazon.com.
If you can sense a plastic smell like a dog’s nose would, or if you are that picky, go get yourself a $5,000 espresso maker, then you have a good reason to pick on them.
For a $50 single serve, this one is perfect if:
1. You like to make a single serve
2. You like a beautiful and sturdy design
3. You like it simple and easy
4. You like to directly rinse and wipe down all parts that need cleaning, away from the machine in a sink
5. You like it super hot and super quick
6. You like a permanent filter
Learning from other positive reviews, here are all the tricks to avoid those negative complaints:
- Grind your own beans at fine setting (I use Capresso Conical Burr 560 ordered from Amazon)
- Use filtered or bottled water
- Press a bit on the grounds using the back of a spoon
Why so many complaints?
- Using pre-ground coffee, too coarse for this machine
- Using tap water
- Never used a French Press, so cleaning this simple beauty becomes a chore
A funny complaint was about making a mess around the counter area by using this machine. All filter parts are specifically designed as removable, that means you can put in coffee grounds or clean them away from the machine, in a sink, or over a cheap plastic tray, whatever. If you make a mess out of a tiny scoop, it is not fair to blame the machine.
All in all, thanks to all the negative reviews, the price has been down quite a few notches, go get it before everyone realizes the truth: this is the best single-serve coffee maker on the market right now. Then it could be out of stock all of a sudden.
